I had been deciding whether to take a bus tour or rent a 4WD to see Fraser Island. After looking at the insurance options, I picked the bus. I was concerned about getting salt water damage to the vehicle, not so much difficulty of driving. But after getting there and seeing the 4WD tracks on the interior, I made the right choice (just for the wrong reason!). The interior track on Fraser Island are single track, with a few passing sidings for oncoming traffic, and built on very soft sand. I saw more than a few 4WDs stuck on the interior trails. The bus trip took us through the interior to this stop at Central Station where we visited a rainforest on this great sandy island. We even saw a python enjoying the sunshine! The trees are tall and the foreset dense. Not a whole lot of light below the canopy! The trip continued through to the beach which went on for miles and then concluded at one of the interior lakes filled with rainwater for some beach time. Taking your own 4WD on the island would have been great fun - the island has a lot of camping and many more miles of coastline to explore.
