Broome is a small outpost shire in Western Australia. It's famous for its pears - half the shops in the small town centre are dedicated to selling pearl jewelery with pearls harvested off the Kimberley coast. Broome is also the gateway to adventures in the Kimberley with tour operators offering packages to the the region's incredible and difficult to reach sights. During the height of the tourist season - June-September - the shire's population jumps from 10-15,000 residents up to close to 60, 000. Cable Beach runs 25 kilometres along the Indian Ocean, with the first five kilometres dedicated to people and the next twenty a mix of people, four wheel drives ... and Camels. Yes, Camels. Definately native to Australia! The Cable Beach Camel rides are a signature of Broome. They run in the morning, afternoon and if you want to pay a premium there is also a sunset Camel ride. Taking photos while dodging four wheel drives is free! The beach is the end-point of an underwater cable between Australia and Singapore, completed in 1880.
