King George River

A journey up the King George River is one of the highlights of the Kimberley. The river runs through a deep sandstone gorge that looks like a crack in the earth. 12 kilometers upstream from Koolama Bay, the river drops 40 metres over the King George Falls. Well, the water flows over the falls in the wet season and by the time of our visit in August the water had stopped flowing and our boat could come right up to the base of the blackened rock forming the falls. In the afternoon, the sun was directly behind the falls making a photo of the falls difficult. I have a few photos of where the falls are, but none I particularly like enough to post.

The river was named after King George V in 1911. Koolama is a large bay and the entrance to this river isn't very obvious. Along the river, we saw lot of birds and a snubnose dolphin.
