Read MoreMorning at Lizard Island
When you go to Lizard Island, get up early and climb to the top of Cook's Look. It takes about 3 hours to get up to the 359 metre summit and get back down to the beach. You get a 360 degree views of the surroundings, including the beach at Lizard Island National Park and the ocean beyond the Great Barrier Reef. After repairing the Endeavour, James Cook landed on Lizard Island, climbed to the top of what is now Cook's Look and mapped the passage out of the reef system. This shot is from fairly early in the hike from one of the "rest points". You can't see the fringing reefs along the beach yet - the morning light isn't strong enough. It's a nice beach to walk off, into the water with your snorkelling gear on and view giant clams, sea cucumbers, coral and hundreds of different kinds of fish!
