Shirley Lake Trail - Carved Through the Aspen Forest
Shirley Lake Trail passes through a few meadows where Elk Island's bison roam, and past a several lakeshores between bogs and the aspen forest. Most of the trail, though, is carved through the aspens like in this shot. The trail has a fairly gentle series of ups and downs and would make an enjoyable cross country ski outing in the winter. The gentle rolling hills are very typical of the area around Elk Island National Park. Up until a few years ago, I understand that Parks Canada groomed a series of trail in Elk Island but has since discontinued. Cross country skiing isn't the most popular sport, I suppose, but the 2000 participants in the Canadian Birkenbeiner which briefly passes through the south part of Elk Island National Park would disagree.
