Ice on Astotin Lake
It's been a long and lingering winter. On April 29, ice still covers much of Astotin Lake. The muskrats were actively swimming in the portion of the lake near the shore where the ice had cleared. A few birds were walking over the ice. Four weeks ago, I walked out on the lake half-way to High Island.
Today was a mix of sun, clouds and rain - some interesting storm clouds over the city. They were transforming to giant fluffy clouds in the evening which I was hoping would make a very nice sunset over the lake. The black storm clouds lingered in the west leaving very little sunset behind High Island. The dark rain clouds do make an interesting backdrop - especially those that look like they are touching down on the right side.
Elk Island was the busiest I've seen it for this early in the season. Lots of people at the lake in the evening - even some campfires. The free entry to National Parks this year might have somethign to do with it. Or schedules may be adjusted with Oilers' playoff games every second night being required viewing in Northern Alberta is forcing people to concentrate their other activities to the off-nights.
