Tawayik Lake

Tawayik Lake is one of the most enjoyable hikes I've done in Elk Island National Park. Much of the trail is through an aspen forest, with brief glimpses of several of Elk Island's lakes through the trees but there is a long stretch through a meadow where Bison roam. It's quite the thrill to see the bison relatiely close by, but you need to keep far enough away to give the giant fellows their space! The trail is a little bit tricky to find - there are few trees or large rocks to place trail markers on and the trail is little used meaning there isn't a well worn footpath. I hiked Tawayik in mid-Fall on a warm, Alberta blue-sky day. The fall colours were largely gone by that time and leaves blown away. The black and white seemed to give the most pleasing effect on the photos with the trees crisp skeletal branches against the sky.
